      I have not had major warping, but the bottom is still a little over an inch thick. The thinner the more likely it is to warp.

    Hi, what are the dimensions of your furring strips on the ceiling beams? They don't look like 1x2's. Did you cut them out of a type of plywood? I like how it just goes over the humps at the ends as these humps in the NVs makes difficult to use 1x2's over them. You even made the end beam with the same bump to match for the panels to line up. I do see that you sliced flex grooves into them which is cool.

      I would go with 1.5" or 2" foam to make is sturdier. That would give you larger surface areas at the joints.

    What an awesome build montage, there's a shortage of foamie builds on YT and this covers so much of the process. For the hinges, did you just screw that straight into the foam? Is there any concern about wearing it down?

    just came across this. the PMF coating looks great, the whole trailer looks great. Do you water down the glue as well? and how many coats of paint did you end up using ? also, what are your thoughts on using bed sheets for the cloth?

    • @thelwood
      @thelwood Місяць тому

      I don't water down the glue. I do 50/50 coat a 75/25 coat and 3 full coats sand between. Bed sheets will work, but I like the thick protection from the canvas. Happy building!

    Thanks for the tutorial. Really helpful. The coffee table I plan to add a similar hinge to happens to be a table with a flat top treasure chest where the bottom half and chest lid are about the same height. So once I remove the fabric hinges of the lid, it’ll be a box with a lid. Also the wood is quite thin like plywood/ mdf board. How do I add the hinge to the lid and what precautions can I take so the thin wood won’t splinter with use.

    You're going about it the wrong way. Edge-bonding foam board is a fool's folly... simply because of the porosity. As you demonstrated several times... even when the adhesive doesn't fail, the foam itself does. Try this instead: This method is called "scrim bonding", as the material used to reinforce the adhesive is called "scrim material", or simply "scrim". Ideally, you want your material width to be AT LEAST twice as wide as your board thickness. Example, 2" boards should use 4" wide scrim. Step 1- assemble the board securely in their desired position Step 2- apply a generous layer of adhesive to both corners of a butt joint, or inside and out of any corner. The base layer should be slighty wider than the width of the board to either side, to ensure full adhesion of the scrim material. No need to go crazy... just enough as so it doesn't drip. Step 3 - apply your chosen scrim material, and press it firmly into the adhesive, using a putty knife or similar to bed the centerline well into the corner, and smooth down each side. Step 4 - after the adhesive reaches a high-tack state, apply another thin layer over your scrim material, making sure to coat it thoroughly to the edges. This will provide you with a much stronger bond, while also mitigating stress across a much larger and smoother surface area. The scrim material you choose will also make a difference. -Window screen is affordable, works well, and can be purchased in large rolls for cutting any length/width you need. Make sure to use fiberglass or aluminum. Aluminum has more memory, and won't be so prone to lift from the corners while curing. Also, cheap aluminum screen usually isn't coated... so cheaper is better, to ensure proper adhesion. I don't recommend poly screen, as it's usually coated and may not bond well. -masonry scrim is available in a wide array of materials, and weaves... but most are generally too stiff for this application. Those that are too stiff are often reffered to as "structural" or "veneer scrim". That's not what you want. You need the more flexible material used for stucco features and such. While this option is more expensive, it's also much stronger... so at the very least, you should use it in higher stress areas, or a small patch every 3ft or so. Your adhesive also makes a difference (obviously, the topis of this video). I noticed you use very rigid adhesives, but in this scenario, a little give is better. What you're looking for is a non-flammable, non-skinning adhesive. 3M and other reputable companies have options available in hardware stores and automotive/autobody suppliers. The important part is NON-SKINNING. It's what allows both coats to acheive a high-tack and adhere to your scrim.

    Thanks for your excellent tutorial. How have been your experiences in the long term concerning the resistance against solvents? Does the PMF layer prevent accidental exposure, for example at gas stations, from diffusing through to the XPS, and therefore damage? Thanks, and best wishes.

      Thank you! The PMF has held up really great on my trailers. However, they have had low exposure to solvents. That is an excellent question. Airplanes used to be coated in it. I also live in the desert so I don't have salted roads and stuff to deal with. Sorry that I don't have more definitive answers to that great question

      @@thelwoodThanks. I'll report what I find out. I was asking because I temporarily placed a 5-inch thick in front of a broken glass balcony door. Obviously, just a little gas from the double window was enough to melt a dent. Even that thick XPS plate due to that bowed in the opposite direction.

    @thelwood how would I make the poor man’s fiberglass on the inside. Do I need a frame for the teardrop or are the walls and roof enough. And would it be a good idea to add a small layer of wood on the inner walls instead of PMF

    3M products and Loctite make glue specifically for bonding foam, In regards to foam trailers, we’ve been building bicycle foam trailers for about 10 years here and we have found that the best method of joint construction is not to use glue but to use weatherproof foil tape used in high temperature ducting. I use 3M or Nashua. Look up Brian Campbell Bike RV, are use the original plans and drawings for Brian’s earth ship bicycle RVs for my trailers, these were given to me by Brian’s former business partner after Brian disappeared.

      Thank you for the information! I would have never considered tape, I am interested in trying that!

    I wonder if one could build a foam high top for a van. The fiberglass ones are expensive !
